Holy Love

By Will Howard
willhow4@gmail.com

They say it was by the grace of god
The bloodied little girl was found
Amidst the crush of cruel concrete,
In a ruined city of devastated buildings
Where bodies of men and women, dead,
Lay smelly, strewn in the street, magotted,
Or under fallen walls and roofs
While the living shunted here and there
Walking or creeping for days unfed,
No water, no shelter, aimlessly wandering,
Throats parched, bellies hurting—
Wounded people, lost, with crusted tears,
Arms and legs with bones protruding—
People inching past dug holes
With hundreds of stacked bodies
While twenty thousands daily die
And the one bloodied girl was found,
Found, they say, by the grace of god--
So kind and loving and full of mercy.
